We're also looking forward to a visit from the leprechaun.  Each year he visits our classroom leaving a huge mess!

Math:

We are working with numbers 1-20 in our new topic in math.  Have your child practice identifying teen numbers and writing them.  We write them often when completing the calendar but extra practice at home is always helpful.  Another skill we continue to practice in the classroom is counting on.  For example, when your child is counting using a 10 frame, s/he does not need to count each box of the frame.   Instead, your child should identify that if all boxes in the 10 frame are filled, start counting at 10 and count forward 11, 12, 13 etc.

Although we have finished our topics on subtraction and addition, it is important to keep these skills fresh in your child's mind.  We will review theses skills in school, but some review at home is helpful.  Have your child practice simple math equations with answers through 5.  Flash cards for adding and subtraction  are a great way to encourage independent learning.  Fluency is a skill that will be assessed for report cards.  The expectation is for your child to see an equation such a 3+2= and be able to automatically say 5.  The following are the equations your child should have automatic fluency in:
1+0=               1+1=              2+1=             3+1=             4+1=
2+0=               1+2=              2+2=             3+2=
3+0=               1+3=              2+3=
4+0=               1+4=
5+0=

1-0=                5-4=               4-3=              3-2=               2-1=     1-1=
2-0=                5-3=               4-2=              3-1=
3-0=                5-2=               4-1=
4-0=                5-1=
5-0=

ELA:
We will continue to work in our SIPPS groups.  Please review all sight words at night along with the stories in your child's folder.  Feel free to practice all sight words on your child's page, but the highlighted words are the words your child has learned in school and is responsible for knowing.  Creating a sight word wall or even sight word flashcards at home is a great way to reinforce these words.  Lesson/story 55 is the end of SIPPS.  If your child passes the assessment at this point s/he will continue to work in a small group with me but will be reading stories with a heavy concentration on comprehension.  You will not see new SIPPS stories but it is always good to read over the stories and practice the sight words.  Students who are no longer in SIPPS will have challenge sight words they will be learning.

I can't stress enough how important nightly review of sight and sound words are.  I can see a big difference during SIPPS lessons when a student has been reviewing the words vs. a student who is not practicing them at home.
