February Projection

February

We have so much fun things going on this month!

* Black History Month: Who were Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, and Harriet Tubman?

* Groundhog's Day:  Will the groundhog see its shadow???

* Valentine's Day:  We will be exchanging Valentine's Day cards. We have 21 children in the class. We have 11 boys and 10 girls.   If you are bringing in cards please only sign your name.  Do not write the names of the children in the class.  It is much easier for the children to distribute them this way.

* On February 12th we are celebrating the 100th day of school.  The PTO has generously supplied us with activities for this monumental date.

* President's Day: Who were George Washington and Abe Lincoln?

Math:
We are continuing to work with addition and subtraction.  This topic focuses on increasing fluency with both of these skills.  Continue to reinforce the vocabulary terms add, plus, sum, equals, subtraction, minus, and difference.  Tell your child simple math stories such as:  5 penguins were on the iceberg, 1 jumped in the water, how many penguins were on the iceberg?  Help your child to figure out whether the equation is one of addition or subtraction.

Provide manipulatives for your child if it makes it easier; however when working with fluency remember that the goal is to add and subtract through 5 without the manipulatives.

These are the fluency facts your child is responsible for knowing.  Your child should be presented with the fact and be able to provide the answer within 2 seconds. This takes practice.

ELA:
We will continue to work in our SIPPS groups.  Please review all sight words at night along with the stories in your child's folder.  Feel free to practice all sight words on your child's page, but the highlighted words are the words your child has learned in school and is responsible for knowing.  Creating a sight word wall or even sight word flashcards at home is a great way to reinforce these words.
