Welcome to the new school year.  This month will be all about settling in with routines and procedures in the classroom.  Students will be touring the school to get familiar with their environment for the next 10 months.  Students will be learning the expectations of a kindergartner and finding their niche in our class. During Back to School Night I will be going over everything you need to know for the year (there is a lot!!).  In the meantime, use these web pages to familiarize yourself with our class. I look forward to a fun year of learning with the kids. Kindergarten is such a special year and I want it to be memorable for every child.

Math: This month we will start out slow going over calendar skills.  We complete the calendar on a daily basis. Review the days of the week and months of the year with your child.  In addition, help your child to locate dates on a calendar. Great questions to ask include:

* What day of the week comes after _______?

* What day of the week comes before ______?

* What is the date after the ____?

* What is the date two days before the _____?

Midway through the month we will be starting our math program with counting.

ELA: This month we will be concentrating on letters and sounds. Our SIPPS program does not begin until the end of October. Students need to be able to identify 20/26 lowercase letters in order to start the SIPPS program.  We will spend the first 6 weeks of school concentrating on learning these letters and sounds to prepare students for the program. Your child is not being assessed on saying the alphabet, they need to know the uppercase, lowercase, and sounds of letters in isolation.  At home try some of the following to reinforce letters and sounds:

* use flashcards to help your child id lowercase and uppercase letters as well as sounds

* have your child identify words that begin with a specific letter

* have your child complete alphabet puzzles

* play "concentration" - place the letter flashcards on the floor face down. The object of the game is to match the capital and lowercase letters. Each player turns over two cards when it is her/his turn. If they match they keep the cards. If not they are placed down and the next player goes. The winner has the most cards at the end of the game!

Letter Formation:  Encourage your child to print the following forms: slant line / \, circle around o, straight line down l, curve around c.  After they have mastered these forms they can print all the letters of the alphabet.  HELPFUL HINT:  Children tend to begin printing at the bottom and go up but correct letter formations will always be from top to bottom.  Try to reinforce this at home as well as left to right progression.

Enjoy!!
